This past September, schools in the Northeast/East Bronx Catholic School Region welcomed 1,256 students into their 14 free Universal Pre-Kindergarten programs, making the NE/E Bronx the largest employer of UPK teachers in the archdiocese. Santa Maria School has the highest UPK enrollment in the region, with 194 children.

In addition, the region awarded 283 new regional scholarships so even more children in the NE/E Bronx could attend regional Catholic schools.

Teachers in the region will be supported this year by a major instructional initiative spearheaded in the NE/E Bronx. It involves a partnership with PlanbookEdu.com, a cloud-based tool that provides teachers the ability to electronically create lesson plans aligned with the Common Core Learning Standards (CCLS), keep track of multiple classes and access online resources.

The region also focused on providing students and teachers with added math resources, supported by after-school math instruction at many of its schools. As a result, state test scores in Math went up as a region in 2013-14.

The NE/E Bronx Region also boasts some of the highest scores on the archdiocese’s annual religion test. As with every region, Catholic faith and values are demonstrated in the NE/E Bronx Region through service projects, such as the annual “Feed Our Neighbors” campaign hosted by St. Clare of Assisi School, which helped feed 200 families during the Thanksgiving holiday season.

Technology is enhancing daily classroom activities in creative ways. In May 2014, seventh graders at St. Raymond’s School met with Archbishop Claudio Maria Celli, President of the Pontifical Council for Social Communications, as part of an ongoing class campaign to arrange a skype session with Pope Francis.

When the New York Daily News profiled Jane Stefanini, Principal at St. Lucy School, it cited her “dedication and compassion” for her students. Her commitment is representative of the strong leadership which can be found at schools throughout the region.
